Officially titled “An Infrastructure to support the creation and exhibition of collaborative video projects through the implementation of both mobile and web-based platforms.”, Six Shooter is my Final Year Project for my Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Design at the University of Limerick.

My project aims to design and build an infrastructure to support the creation and exhibition of collaborative video projects through the implementation of both mobile and web-based platforms. The platform seeks to source video clips from users via the Android smartphone and compile them into a single collaborative piece. The videos produced by this system will share a number of defining characteristics:

• Single subject matter – This subject is chosen when each project is created. Users are encouraged to contribute a clip which relates to the chosen subject.The subject matter can be real or abstract.

• Limited clip length – The length of each individual clip captured on the Android will be limited to a relatively short maximum length so as to give only a moments insight into each users’ interpretation of the subject.

These parameters are imposed to allow a fluid final piece and to encourage creativity in the selection of the subject matter.

In a typical workflow, a user elects to curate a video piece by suggesting a topic and setting the number of clips they wish to collect. Suppose the curator starts a project in which “Autumn” is the subject and the clip quota is 20, the project would become open and would be visible to users of the Android application and included among other open projects on web interface. Users can then capture a clip and submit it to the project. When the quota has been reached, the project closes and the clips are compiled into one collaborative piece for each subject matter.The sorting or editing of the clips will take place once all the clips have been uploaded to the server. The order, timing and transition type will be specified by the curator of the project. Once the piece has been processed, it will be displayed on the web platform where a description and list of contributors will be available.
